Programs for heating, AC and refrigeration move to Westwood College of Aviation Technology

May 20, 2005—People seeking careers in the quickly growing field of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration installation and repair (HVAC/R) can get the education they need through the Diploma and Associate’s degree programs now offered at Westwood College of Aviation Technology in Broomfield, Colo.

The HVAC/R program, previously offered at Westwood’s Denver North campus, moved to the aviation campus for the May term, which commenced May 13. Moving the program to the aviation campus enables students to focus specifically on the HVAC/R field. Students also benefit from being surrounded by other students with similar interests in mechanics and electronics.

Westwood HVAC/R students receive hands-on involvement with small-, medium- and large-scale systems and gain first-hand experience on sophisticated technology such as control systems, commercial refrigeration units, domestic and commercial heating and cooling units.

In addition to technical training, students also learn communication and customer-service skills that are critical to an employee’s success in this industry. Students are also tested for EPA certification for handling refrigerants, a mandatory certification for employment in the industry.

Westwood’s HVAC/R Diploma program focuses on providing students the training needed to work with residential technology, while also exposing students to select commercial applications. The Associate’s degree in HVAC/R builds on the residential foundation of the Diploma program and focuses on commercial applications, as well as more detailed diagnostic skills and electrical/mechanical controls.
