by Brianna Crandall — September 29, 2014—The Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association (PRSM) has customized a report from Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency to help the retail industry benchmark energy consumption across all 10 provinces. In addition to providing data for total retail store energy consumption, the report also provides the same data for warehouses in Canada.

“Energy consumption and increasing utility rates represents a big challenge to the retail industry, which across all segments continues to explore ways to reduce this expense across Canada, and in the United States. Understanding the big picture is the first step towards establishing targets for cost reduction, and PRSM Association is happy to provide the industry with these benchmarks,” said Patricia Dameron, Executive Director, PRSM Association.

2014 Benchmarking Report: Utilities Consumption in Canada is produced with data from the Survey of Commercial and Institutional Energy Use — Buildings 2009 — Detailed Statistical Report — December, 2012 by Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency.

The 18-page report, which includes more than 15 charts, segments energy consumption information for retail stores in Canada by climate zone, building age, store size, store type, number of floors in the building, type of renovation, and hours of store operation.

Information from the report will allow a retailer with stores in Canada to compare utilities consumption to other retail stores in Canada, and is useful to U.S. retailers who are looking to expand their brand into Canada, notes PRSM. The report will also provide useful information to identify a climate zone (location) and type of renovation that may be more energy efficient for newly constructed stores.
