by Brianna Crandall — March 25, 2013—A total of 1,865 designers, architects and companies from 54 countries submitted their current designs in the 19 different categories for this year’s “red dot award: product design 2013” competition, which honors aesthetic forms, well thought-out innovations and groundbreaking trends. From fashion and accessories to construction projects and vehicles, electronics and furniture, the entries cover the entire range of contemporary product design and architecture. This year’s jury, the largest ever and hailing from 24 countries, evaluated a staggering 4,662 products, more than ever before in the history of the award.

For 2013, the panel of experts awarded the “red dot” for excellent product design to a total of 1,065 products and the “honourable mention” for notable and especially refined detail solutions to 205 products. In addition, 58 products won the “red dot: best of the best,” the highest award in the competition. Only 1.2% of all entries were considered worthy of this prize in 2013. A full 71.5% of the products entered did not receive an award.

The product categories include Lighting and Lamps, Gardens, Interior Design, Architecture and Urban Design, Offices, Industry and Crafts, Life Science and Medicine, Computers and Information Technology, and more. Products were assessed on the criteria of: degree of innovation, functionality, formal quality, ergonomics, durability, symbolic and emotional content, product periphery, self-explanatory quality, and ecological compatibility.

The award-winning designers and companies will be celebrated at an awards ceremony on July 1, 2013, in Essen, Germany, with a subsequent Designers’ Night in the “red dot” design museum, along with a special exhibition of all of the award-winning products from July 2 to 28, also in the museum.
