November 13, 2006—Rooflifters, a Canadian owned and operated company that rejuvenates older buildings by raising their roofs for vertical expansion, has completed the roof lifting of the future home of a Planters Peanuts center, in Toronto, ON, Canada.
In, May Rooflifters began the project of raising the roof on the 70,000 sq.ft. future home of Planters Peanuts New Canadian Distribution Center, located in the heart of Toronto ‘s industrial core on Chesswood Drive. The roof was raised to a height of 34 feet from its current height of 18 feet, creating an additional 1.12 million cubic feet of warehouse space.
Rooflifters technology works by placing its patented CribPost system underneath the main structural beams of a building. After the posts are welded in place, the columns, all services, and other infrastructure components are severed. The CribPosts then hydraulically lift the entire roof of the building at one time at a rate of 6 to 12 inches an hour. Once the roof reaches the desired height, the structure is enclosed with metal, stucco, brick, or block cladding. Columns, services, and other infrastructures are then re-attached.
“Roof lifting is quicker, less expensive, and much less taxing on the environment than other methods for expansion of commercial and industrial properties,” says Marty Shiff, Rooflifters president. “By utilizing main structural beams there is no waste of construction materials.”
