by jbs081210 f3 — August 18, 2010—Samsung Electronics Co., global provider of digital convergence technologies and device solutions, recently announced the first-year results of its PlanetFirst initiative, a companywide commitment to become one of the world’s most environmentally friendly companies by 2013.

Samsung says it invested 1.01 trillion Korean won (about $865 million) in developing eco-friendly products and building green manufacturing sites in 2009. The company says it has also reduced sales-normalized greenhouse emissions from its manufacturing facilities by 31 percent and increased the average energy efficiency of its new products by 16 percent, among other accomplishments.

Samsung reported its progress across four core objectives laid out under the Eco-Management 2013 initiative, which was unveiled in July 2009: Reducing greenhouse emissions from facilities and products; expanding eco-friendly products offering; investing in eco-friendly R&D and manufacturing facilities; and building eco-management partnerships with customers and suppliers.
