Schindler Elevator wins Pittsburgh’s North Shore connector project

by AF 0510 g5 — May 13, 2009—Schindler Elevator Corporation will supply elevators and escalators to Port Authority of Allegheny County’s North Shore Connector Project in Pittsburgh.

The high-profile construction plan will extend the Port Authority’s light-rail system by 1.2 miles to connect Downtown Pittsburgh with the North Shore. Three new stations will be built for the expansion and will feature a total of eight elevators and five escalators from Schindler.

The underground Gateway Center Station will receive two elevators and one escalator, the North Side Station will have four elevators and two escalators installed, and the Allegheny Station will feature two elevators and two escalators at its elevated site.

The North Shore project is using five Schindler 9700 escalators that are specifically designed for the robust, high-traffic requirements of transit applications.

Expected to be operational in 2011, the North Shore Connector features two tunnels partially beneath the Allegheny River. Once completed, the project will give residents greater access to the North Shore’s entertainment, sports and cultural attractions.
