by Rebecca Walker — July 26, 2010—The U.S. Senate has put on hold efforts to pass legislation that would limit emissions of heat-trapping gases linked to climate change.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday support falls below the 60 senators needed for even a limited proposal seeking to restrict emission from electric power companies. Now, top Democrats are saying they will introduce a scaled-down version of the bill, without the cap-and-trade provision.
The new bill, according to CNN, will invest in natural gas vehicles to reduce dependence on foreign oil; will add an energy efficiency program; will support land and water conservation; and will work to prevent environmental disasters like the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
