by Shane Henson — June 8, 2011—The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) has launched a new lighting guide, LG5: Lighting for Education, designed to cover all aspects of lighting in the classroom and lecture theater.

The publication offers advice on the lighting of educational spaces, including lecture theaters, teaching rooms, conference rooms, and special-purpose rooms such as gymnasiums, art rooms and dance studios. It highlights the importance of sufficient and suitable lighting for any learning environment, and how the quality of light in the learning environment will directly affect students’ learning experience and their motivation to learn.

In addition to providing guidance on lighting equipment and its positioning, the guide focuses on other important factors such as the decoration and finishes of rooms and the positioning of lighting controls and access doors, all of which need to be taken into account from the earliest stages of the planning process. The publication also includes coverage of lighting design, constraints, natural and electric lighting, costs and maintenance, lighting for particular applications, emergency lighting, and lighting for pupils with visual and hearing impairments.
