South Coast Plaza is first with electric vehicle charging stations from Coulomb Technologies

by Rebecca Walker — April 26, 2010—South Coast Plaza, in Costa Mesa, California, is the first shopping center in the United States to install state-of-the-art Coulomb Technologies electric vehicle charging stations.

The ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations are located in the lower level parking structure and are available for all customers of South Coast Plaza.

“As the first installation in the nation of a networked charging station within a shopping center, we hope that other organizations will look to South Coast Plaza as an example and welcome this new wave of transportation,” said Richard Lowenthal, the chief executive officer of Coulomb Technologies.

Features of the ChargePoint Network include notification by text message or email about completion status of the charging session; ability to locate charging stations via Google maps on a cell phone; and numerous safety features to prevent the theft of a cord.

South Coast Plaza has implemented many other environmentally friendly programs, including e-recycling; the use of drought-tolerant plants for landscaping; and the use of biodegradable janitorial products.
