by AF 0720 g3 — July 22, 2009—Interlock Industries announced that it has launched two new adhesives under the Spray-Lock branding to complement its existing line of flooring adhesive: 3500 for sheet-goods flooring, and 5500 for ceramic wall tile.

3500 allows heat-welding the same day of installation, and 5500 allows for grouting within 1-hour, according to the manufacturer. Because they use 80% less adhesive than most other products, drying time is significantly reduced. Instead of the putty-like mastic adhesives widely used to install carpet, vinyl, and ceramic tile, Spray-Lock adhesives are sprayed on and typically dry in ten minutes or less; in very humid conditions, drying time can be a few minutes longer. The reduced drying time makes Spray-Lock ideal for medical and retail facilities, where downtime is of the essence.

In addition, by using a spray system instead of using a trowel, considerable application time is saved. When using putty-like adhesives, Interlock says that contractors typically have to wait 24 hours to heat-weld sheet good flooring or to grout ceramic wall tile.

The bond is strong enough, allowing 1,500 lbs. per square foot, so that even heavy equipment such as forklifts can be driven on the flooring immediately. Because the product is water-based (instead of the widely-used putty-like mastic adhesives), if there is an accidental overspray during installation of a wall product, it can be cleaned off with a water dampened cloth.

Besides being water-based, all Spray-Lock products contain no solvents and are free of VOCs. Spray-Lock uses low-pressure propellant, has no flammable components, and is odorless. Spray-Lock comes in aerosol cans (ideal for small jobs); a hand-gun spray system is recommended for larger applications. In both cases, the installer can apply Spray-Lock while in a standing position, greatly easing the application process.

Aerosol can is used for small wall applications.

The importance of 80% reduction in adhesive can be put into perspective through Wal-Mart, one of Spray-Lock’s first major customers. Wal-Mart has been using Spray-Lock for five years in all its new and remodeled stores. Over the past three years, Wal-Mart reports having saved 3.6 million pounds of adhesive—a major sustainability story in itself.

The new product is available directly from the manufacturer and will be in retail stores by the end of September. It is produced in Interlock’s Chatsworth, Georgia, manufacturing plant. Interlock is headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
