State Department announces design architects for new or renovated U.S. embassies in several countries

by Brianna Crandall — August 22, 2014—The Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) has selected several architectural firms from around the nation in recent weeks to create designs for new embassies or current embassies undergoing renovations in several countries. The projects and firms are listed below.

Ankara, Turkey
OBO chose Ennead Architects of New York, New York, as the architect for the new U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey. The multi-building complex will be situated on a nine-acre site in the Karakusunlar neighborhood, and will include a chancery, U.S. Marine Corps residence, warehouse, support annex, utility building, parking garage, and community facilities. A construction award for the project is anticipated in fiscal year 2016.

Colombo, Sri Lanka
OBO selected Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill as the design architect for a new U.S. Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The new U.S. Embassy complex will be located on a six-acre site in the Kollupitiya neighborhood of Colombo, Sri Lanka. The project includes a five-story chancery building, a U.S. Marine Corps residence, a utility building, a warehouse, community facilities, and a parking structure. A design-build award for the project is anticipated in fiscal year 2015.

Amman, Jordan
OBO announced the design/build construction award, through best value determination, for a major renovation of the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan, to B.L. Harbert International of Birmingham, Alabama. The project will provide a new office annex and community facilities, as well as major renovation to the existing 12-acre embassy site, including security upgrades to the chancery building, and life safety and infrastructure improvements. Project completion is anticipated in fiscal year 2018. EYP Architecture & Engineering of Albany, New York, is the design architect, and Page of Arlington, Virginia, is the architect of record.

Design-build and construction services contract
OBO also selected 25 firms for an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) worldwide design-build and construction services contract. The IDIQ selections include set asides for 8(a) firms; HUBZone businesses; service-disabled, veteran-owned businesses; women-owned businesses; and small businesses; as well as full-and-open competition. The contract duration is one base year, with four option years. The selected firms are:
