State of Maine adopts NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code and Life Safety Code

August 30, 2004—The 2003 editions of NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code (UFC), and NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, have been adopted statewide in Maine, effective August 9, 2004. Both codes are elements of the Comprehensive Consensus Codes (C3) set developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and other leading code developers.

NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code, is the integration of the two most widely adopted fire codes in the country: NFPA 1, Fire Prevention Code, and the Uniform Fire Code. The 2003 edition of NFPA 1 is the culmination of a multi-year effort by NFPA and the Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA) to create the first fully integrated national fire code.

NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, is one of the nation’s oldest safety documents, and is the most comprehensive code addressing safety to life in new and existing buildings. NFPA 101 is used in every state and adopted statewide in 35 states.

These and all NFPA codes and standards are developed through a process accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The C3 set is the first full, integrated set of codes and standards developed through ANSI-accredited processes. The C3 set is being developed through a partnership involving NFPA, the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), WFCA, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
