by Ann Withanee — September 21, 2011—A light sculpture called Raising Lantern can be playfully changed according to need or artistic bent; it can be a floor lamp or a ceiling-hung pendant, each bringing a warm glow to interior spaces. Raising Lamp arrives flat; its cylindrical shapes are transformed into a lamp that shrinks or grows in height. Turned around, it adds a luminous glow as a ceiling hung pendant.
Raising Lantern made its debut at an exhibition in London (September 20-25, The Annexe, The Brick Lane Gallery) that showcased the work of Studio Lawrence for the first time in the United Kingdom. The event also celebrated the award-winning design team’s move from Holland to London.
The exhibition also unveiled dynamic seating pieces, each eliciting a surprised second look because of its artful whimsy, a trademark for the serious interior furnishings designed by Studio Lawrence.
Components of the modular sofa system, called To Gather, can be grouped and quickly regrouped to fit a space or an attitude. Covered in bright, bold fabrics, To Gather composes its individual elements in endless configurations using standard seat with or without arms, or just one arm; a square cushion armrest can also hold a laptop; there’s even a love seat. All pieces in bold quality Kvradrat fabrics bring an unexpected playful life to a waiting room or corporate lounge.
The Wonky chairs force a double-take because of their five asymmetrical shapes. The solid wood in black or white can contrast with opposite colors for the metal frame. Pillows bring added comfort.
