by Ann Withanee — September 10, 2010—Social networking sites are growing in popularity not just for downtime, but also for serious business contacts, according to a poll from FM World.

FM World, the online magazine of the British Institute of Facilities Management, asked the 100 FMs if social networking sites, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, are useful to their career.

LinkedIn was by far the site mentioned most often. It remains the best “for keeping in touch with business users in the FM world. I take part in online discussions to see what other people’s ideas are,” said one respondent.

Another FM said he finds the “really useful one is LinkedIn, not so much for actual communication but for research into companies and their staff prior to making an approach—their profiles and often more important their background information I find invaluable in either getting that first contact or in formulating my approach.”

Some FMs said they would never use social networking sites: “I would never dream of using social network site for my career, mainly because access to them are banned in our workplace,” said one, adding, “I’m not an active user at home either.”
