Sydney, Australia, works to make multifamily buildings more energy efficient, sustainable

by Shane Henson — June 4, 2012—Sydney, Australia’s recently launched Smart Green Apartments program has already received accolades from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) for taking an innovative, thoughtful approach to helping building owners improve the energy efficiency and environmental performance of their buildings.

According to the City of Sydney, the program seeks to create more efficient, cost-effective buildings, with a focus on energy and water efficiency and waste reduction. The City of Sydney will work with 25 apartment buildings to improve base building performance, minimize environmental impacts, and connect residents around greening initiatives.

When taking part in the program, the participating building’s Owners Corporation will receive:

  • A subsidized building energy audit
  • A subsidized water monitoring and efficiency plan
  • Costed options to make the building greener and more efficient
  • Knowledge and skills building
