TecMilenio University selects Boon Edam turnstiles to ensure campus safety

by Brianna Crandall — September 16, 2016 — Boon Edam Inc., Netherlands-based provider of entry solutions for 140 years, recently announced that in order to maintain an appropriate, safe environment for its educational community, la Universidad TecMilenio has implemented a multi-campus perimeter security project comprising turnstiles and gates that enables the institution to offer secure yet convenient pedestrian access to its campuses from adjacent parking lots.

TecMilenio University

TecMilenio University installed over 100 Boon Edam security entrances and integrated them with the existing access control system.

TecMilenio University is a private institution of higher learning spread over 29 campuses across Mexico, with 4,500 teachers and 50,000 students enrolled in various courses of study, including professional, masters and online programs.

As part of the perimeter security project, TecMilenio University installed over 100 Boon Edam security entrances and integrated them with the existing access control system. A full 73 of the Trilock 75 model (which features a collapsing arm for emergency egress) and 28 of the Trilock Side Gate, which is available for disabled access, were installed. The turnstiles and gates are located at 25 of the 29 TecMilenio campuses including San Nicolas, Guadalupe, Toluca, Guadalajara, and Hermosillo, among others.

Trilock 75 turnstile

The Trilock 75 tripod turnstile is for spaces where design and aesthetics are important, but that also require a truly robust secured entry solution able to withstand large user volumes and abusive conditions.

Juan Ramsés Herrera, IT manager for the institution, said that the process of choosing an entrance provider was based on institutional standards and very careful selection. The equipment had to efficiently control the entrance and exit of about 150,000 daily users visiting the many TecMilenio campuses.

Among the numerous entrance solutions manufacturers, TecMilenio says it selected Boon Edam’s equipment because of the project’s size and scope and Boon Edam’s ability to deliver on the university’s needs. In addition, Boon Edam’s turnstile and gate designs met the school’s high aesthetic expectations.

Trilock side gate

The Trilock Side Gate complements Boon Edam’s tripod turnstile and optical turnstile models to allow access for those with special needs or the passage of dollies or carts.

Challenges presented by the TecMilenio installation included the need for “blank” cabinets at the end of each turnstile array to create a final lane of passage; the need to provide users with a visual indication of the correct lane to use (each turnstile displays a green arrow when authorized); and then testing and customizing the amount of time a turnstile should remain unlocked to allow an authorized person to enter.

As part of a total security solution that includes remote monitoring, security guards and vehicle access control devices, the Boon Edam turnstiles are expected to increase the feeling of safety within the Universidad TecMilenio educational community.
