by Shane Henson — November 7, 2012—KONE has been chosen by Tucker HiRise and Great Gulf to provide elevators and escalators for its One Bloor project, a 75-story, mixed-use development in Toronto, Canada. Per the contract, KONE will provide a total of nine elevators and two escalators for the innovative project, which features the company’s first JumpLift installation in North America.

The order consists of six KONE EcoSystem MR elevators, three MonoSpace elevators and two escalators, says Kone. Two of the three high-rise EcoSystem MR elevators will feature the KONE JumpLift solution, which was designed to accelerate construction work and increase safety at the construction site. The KONE JumpLift uses temporary machine rooms within the building’s permanent hoistways, which are moved up as the construction work progresses. At One Bloor, this process will continue for 24 months, after which the machines will be easily converted into permanent elevators.

KONE has utilized the JumpLift system at various sites around the world, yet this is the first time the technology will be used in North America, the company says.

The project will also feature the KONE Polaris Destination Control system, making One Bloor by GreatGulf the first building in the Toronto region with this technology, says KONE. KONE Polaris uses artificial intelligence to learn and forecast the traffic flows of the building. Passengers select their destination before being guided to an elevator that has been assigned to take them, and a limited number of other passengers, to a specific range of floors. Because they have been assigned a place in the elevator, boarding is calm and orderly, says KONE.

KONE will begin work on the project in 2014 and is expected to complete the installation by 2016.

One Bloor is a mixed-use high-rise designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects and including luxury condos. Featuring lavishly designed interiors by Cecconi Simone Inc. consulting firm, the high-rise promises “unprecedented” views of Toronto and “indulgent” amenities.
