U.K. unveils construction strategy to reduce costs

by Shane Henson — June 10, 2011—The U.K. Minister for the Cabinet Office, Francis Maude, recently announced the publication of the U.K. government’s new construction strategy.

The Cabinet Office’s 43-page document, Government Construction Strategy, calls for a profound change in the relationship between public authorities and the construction industry to ensure the U.K. government consistently gets a good deal and the country gets the social and economic infrastructure it needs for the long term.

According to the document, the strategy also challenges industry business models and practices. It will replace adversarial cultures with collaborative ones, and will demand cost reduction and innovation within the supply chain to maintain market position.

The Cabinet Office also said it will publish quarterly, from autumn 2011, a rolling two-year forward program of infrastructure and construction projects where public financing has been agreed.
