U.S. Foodservice-San Francisco activates largest solar panel system in Northern California

by Brianna Crandall — April 20, 2011—U.S. Foodservice’s San Francisco division, a Bay Area Green Business-certified facility, has activated a 1.18 megawatt (MW), 4,354 photovoltaic solar panel installation. Reportedly the largest rooftop and carport solar power system in Northern California, it is expected to provide 40 percent of U.S. Foodservice-San Francisco’s power needs during daylight hours.

With a predicted output of more than 1.3 million kilowatt hours (kWh) annually at its peak, the solar array is expected to generate enough electricity to power up to 194 average California homes for one year.

The solar panels were installed by SPG Solar. U.S. Foodservice is leasing the solar system from Delta Electronics, a global provider of renewable energy products. The company says that the installation project provided approximately 70 sustainability-related jobs in the community.

U.S. Foodservice is one of America’s leading foodservice distributors, offering more than 350,000 national brand products and its own private label items and employing some 25,000 associates in more than 60 locations nationwide.
