by jbs081310a3 — August 18, 2010—The University of Melbourne is the first education institution in Australia to sponsor the Green Star Communities project, with its commitment to support the development of a new rating tool for sustainable communities.
According to the chief executive of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), Romilly Madew, the University of Melbourne was a “natural fit” with the Green Star Communities project, which is establishing best practice benchmarks to guide the development of sustainable communities around Australia. GBCA is leading the Green Star Communities project with several supporting organizations.
The University has one 5 Star Green Star-rated building (demonstrating “Australian Excellence”) and three projects registered to achieve Green Star ratings. In addition, the University has mandated at least a 5 Green Star—Education v1 rating for all new major buildings and at least a 4 Star Green Star for any major refurbishments.
