by Shane Henson — October 30, 2013—The University of Washington Athletic Department, an early member of the Green Sports Alliance, recently stepped up their environmental and waste management efforts with the adoption of GreenDrop Recycling Stations.

The recycling stations, developed by Pacific Cascade Corporation to help universities and other entities reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, can be found at the school’s Alaska Airlines Arena and the newly renovated historic Husky Stadium, where more than 730,000 guests attend annually.

“Partnering with GreenDrop allows our athletic department to incorporate a convenient waste-diversion system that patrons can easily utilize without increasing operational costs,” explains Carter Henderson, assistant athletic director. “We evaluated other containers, but GreenDrop was the best option for our recycling needs.”

The 169 GreenDrop Recycling Stations, custom-labeled with the Husky brand, allow users to easily self-sort recyclable and compostable items, with simple visual guidance. Self-sorting reduces the athletic department’s environmental footprint while minimizing expenses and being fiscally responsible through sustainable operations, says Pacific Cascade Corporation.

The GreenDrop Recycling Station was designed through multi-year efforts of the Portland Trail Blazers head office and the newly named Moda Center, formally the Rose Garden Arena. The arena’s landfill diversion rate increased from 38 percent in 2007 to 90 percent in 2011, in part by replacing old-style garbage cans with GreenDrop Recycling Stations, the company says.
