Finally — a light, less technical task chair that moves easily around mobile work settings, and even in the home office

by Brianna Crandall — December 16, 2020 — Innovative workplace furnishings designer and manufacturer Teknion Corporation recently announced the launch of Essa, a light task chair designed by PearsonLloyd for Teknion. With a name derived from the word essence, Essa captures a pure, sculptural shape within a pared-down scale for today’s ever-changing, mobile work environment. Essa was just recognized by Interior Design as its 2020 Best of Year Winner for Task Seating.

[Update October 21, 2021 — Essa received a Gold award in the Seating: Ergonomic Desk/Task category of the prestigious Best of NeoCon Awards at the NeoCon 2021 show.]

Dannion Smith, director, Product Management, Seating and Ergonomic Products at Teknion, remarked:

Essa combines elegance with ergonomics. Comfortable, with intuitive integrated features, Essa’s simplicity is universally welcoming. Curves and contours, rather than multiple adjustment mechanisms, provide just the right amount of support.

As offices gravitate toward a more relaxed and comfortable aesthetic, the demand for a light and less technical task chair has emerged. Promoting natural shifts in position, Essa can be ideal for an array of applications including mobile work and active work settings, as well as the home office.

Taking cues from a classic club chair, Essa is designed to be modern, refined, and receptive. The simple sweep of its back is echoed by the fluid line of molded armrests. The chair is offered fully upholstered or upholstered with plastic back options. Visual and tactile richness is added with Luum Textiles that encase the seat and curved backrest.

Essa is available with or without armrests, in both fixed or height-adjustable formats. Three “fully dipped” finish options provide a seamless look that maintains a unified form. A signature flowing fixed arm provides a soft yet strong look and feel, while a five-star base with casters provides stability and ease of movement.

Luke Pearson, PearsonLloyd, explained:

The forms are essentially derived from where you need material and support, and everything else is taken away. As space becomes ever more precious, the fluid soft curves and compact form not only give great comfort but make the chair pleasurable to navigate and to move around.

Tom Lloyd, PearsonLloyd, added:

We wanted to design a new type of work chair that moves effortlessly between different spaces to support an ever-changing landscape of work styles and cultures. Merging agility and informality, Essa is friendly and comfortable to use. Compact in scale with discrete controls and a friendly aspect, Essa is also a perfect home office complement.
