by Brianna Crandall — May 2, 2011—The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently announced the winners of two sets of awards honoring excellence in library design and sustainable design.
In conjunction with the American Library Association (ALA), AIA selected five recipients to receive the biennial AIA/ALA Library Building Awards celebrating the finest examples of library design by architects licensed in the U.S.
The 2011 winners are:
- Arkansas Studies Institute; Little Rock, AR; Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects
- KAUST Library; Thuwal, Saudi Arabia; HOK
- Mattapan Branch Library, Boston Public Library; Boston; William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc.
- Phoenix Public Library, Harmon Branch; Phoenix; Richard + Bauer Architecture
- William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library, Ohio State University; Columbus, OH; Gund Partnership, Design Architect; Acock Associates Architects, Architect of Record
AIA and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) also selected the top ten examples of sustainable architecture and green design solutions that improve comfort for building occupants and reduce energy consumption and environmental impact. The COTE Top Ten Green Projects program, now in its 15th year, celebrates projects that are the result of a thoroughly integrated approach to architecture, natural systems and technology, says AIA. The projects will be honored at the AIA 2011 National Convention and Design Exposition in New Orleans.
