ASHE online program aids compliance with 2010 FGI Guidelines for design, construction of health care facilities

by Brianna Crandall — April 15, 2015—The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association (AHA) has launched a new e-learning program in collaboration with the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) that covers compliance with the 2010 FGI Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities.

The 2010 FGI Guidelines E-Learning Program offers customized learning with more than 130 educational segments covering specific topics from the 2010 FGI Guidelines.

The ASHE Web site points out that although the newest edition of the FGI Guidelines was published in 2014, a number of states are still using the 2010 edition. This program is designed to help Guidelines users stay in compliance with the 2010 edition and offers 24/7 access to specific topics included in this important document.

The new E-Learning Program features:

  • Expert-led segments ranging from 5 to 25 minutes in length that will allow participants to customize an on-demand learning experience that best suits their situation, project, and needs;
  • Opportunities to earn continuing education units upon completion of a self-assessment at the end of each segment;
  • Material new in the 2010 edition on acoustics, patient handling and movement (PHAMA), patient safety, bariatric patient care, and cancer treatment; and
  • Minimum program, space, engineering, and design criteria for various health care projects.

The Guidelines document is currently adopted or referenced by more than 42 state departments of licensure or health. The 2014 FGI Guidelines publication has been divided into two books: the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals and Outpatient Facilities and the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Residential Health, Care, and Support Facilities.
