by Rebecca Walker — April 1, 2011—ASSA ABLOY has introduced the Norton SafeZone Intelligent Door Closer, which creates a zone of safety around door openings using patent-pending technology to sense movement around a door and hold it open.
“SafeZone was designed for high traffic areas and makes it safer and easier for people to go from one area to another,” said Leslie Saunders, vice president of product management, ASSA ABLOY. “This type of solution enables traffic flow through high volume doorways and should become the standard in commercial building environments.”
The ASSA ABLOY SafeZone combines an on-board motion sensor with an adjustable door closer. When the sensor detects motion in either direction around the door opening, whether it’s one person or a group of people, it prevents the door from closing. When the sensor no longer detects movement, the door closes. The time that SafeZone holds the door open after no longer detecting movement is also programmable, as is the level of detection sensitivity, notes the company.
SafeZone extends the life of the door and its frame in high-traffic areas by reducing the amount of times a door is opened and closed, and helps prevent damage from wheeled equipment or objects accidentally hitting the door. It also provides enhanced security, along with energy savings, since staffers no longer have to prop a door open or leave it open for extended periods of time in heated or air conditioned hallways and vestibules. SafeZone is fire code-compliant and is available with push or pull side mounting, in either left or right-handed models.
In addition to commercial and retail environments, SafeZone is well suited for use in educational institutions, hospitals, healthcare and assisted living facilities, retirement homes, auditoriums, houses of worship or any doorway where safe passage is essential.
