Products were judged on innovation, functionally, visual appeal, quality and manufacturing, human factors, and environmental sustainability. This year, 42 products received a Design Award in recognition of design excellence, and 69 were awarded a Design Mark for good design—a record number, notes the organization.

An intensive care hospital bed designed with safety, comfort, ease-of-use and aesthetics in mind for patients, health practitioners and hospital staff won the 2010 top prize, the Australian International Design Award of the Year. The M8 Intensive Care Bed, designed and manufactured by New Zealand-based company Howard Wright, is designed to allow a range of medical procedures to be undertaken without shifting the patient from the bed, thereby reducing patient handling and risk of injury.

Of the 42 Design Award winners, nine products were nominated for the Design Award of the Year:

  • M8 Intensive Care, designed by Howard Wright;
  • Evoke conference seating system, designed by Outerspace Design and Camatic;
