by Brianna Crandall — March 12, 2014—The U.S. division of international project development and construction group Skanska has signed a major contract for $149 million to build a new special medical building for Stamford Hospital in Connecticut that illustrates a shift in the healthcare facilities market.
Skanska previously completed a new CyberKnife Center at Stamford in 2008, and began construction on the renovation and expansion project for Stamford Hospital to expand the hospital’s services and capacity in 2012, providing extensive upgrades to the infrastructure. The new 60,000-square-meter, 12-story medical specialty building will be constructed on the existing Stamford Hospital Campus. Construction on the new building began in spring 2013, and is expected to be completed in spring 2016.
According to an article in the Commercial Property Executive online magazine, the Skanska-Stamford contract exemplifies the shift in recent healthcare real estate contracts to larger, more technologically advanced buildings. Skanska and other sources for the article see the increase in contracts as due to aging infrastructure and to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
