Melbourne Convention Centre recognized for setting new standard for green innovation

by jbs061909 j3 — June 22, 2009—The world’s “greenest” convention center has set a new standard for green innovation, said the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) at the official opening of the Melbourne Convention Centre (MCC) June 5, 2009.

The Melbourne Convention Centre was awarded a 6 Star Green Star rating for its environmental design in 2008, under the Green Star-Convention Centre PILOT rating tool. Six Star Green Star certification demonstrates “world leadership,” says the GBCA, recognizing that the MCC has set a new global standard for convention center design.

“The scale of the project has provided the opportunity for the development of new and innovative green solutions,” said Chair of the GBCA Tony Arnel, who commended the Plenary Group and the Victorian Government for their leadership and foresight.

The Melbourne Convention Centre was awarded points for innovation in recognition of its pioneering use of chilled floor slabs in conjunction with displacement ventilation, as well as the installation of a black-water treatment plant in a large public building, and for driving product innovation in the supply of new sustainably harvested timber veneered board.
