by Shane Henson — November 13, 2013—The Zip-Up Ceiling division of MP Global Products has brought to market what the company touts as an economical and effective way to close open ceilings or replace damaged ceilings in bathrooms, loading docks, kitchens, interior corridors, and along exterior covered walkways between buildings, while maintaining easy access to piping and wiring overhead.

The Zip-Up Ceiling system, which consists of flexible interlocking waterproof polyvinyl chloride (PVC) components engineered to fit together with only a few tools, is a low-maintenance alternative to drywall or suspended acoustic ceilings, says MP Global Products. As it is waterproof and mold resistant, the ceiling reportedly performs very well in spaces where there is high humidity. Because it utilizes only two inches of headroom, the system can be installed against an existing ceiling without the time and hassle required to remove an unsightly or damaged ceiling, adds the company.

Zip-Up Ceiling, which meets Class A Fire Rating, also delivers a clean, grid-free, flat, non-corrugated washable mold- and mildew-resistant surface. The system features just three primary components: wall trim, main rail, and panels. The main rails and panels are available in white and beige in smooth and serrated finishes to complement many spaces. The finished ceiling is paintable with latex paint. The panels, which the company says will not kink like aluminum might during installation, unzip from the rails for easy removal for cleaning or access. The panels are one foot wide and available in 12- and 16-foot lengths.

In addition, the system reduces installation and life cycle costs when compared to gypsum board and other comparable installations, adds the company.
